What’s with the Name

Fermanagh is pronounced “fer-man-a.”  We know its a bit of a weird name, but we love it. You can check out a pronunciation in the video below.

We chose Fermanagh Farms because of our history. The owners of the farm currently represented by three generations are the 6th, 7th and 8th generation immigrants whose ancestors settled on the 3rd Line of Bradford West Gwillimbury from County Fermanagh, Ireland.

OUR MISSION & PURPOSE

Fermanagh Farms exists to give people the opportunity to connect and celebrate with those important to them, the environment that sustains them and the spirit that created them.

THE PEOPLE BEHIND THE FARM

The Mills Family has a long history of being farmers, neighbours and contributors to the local communities of Dunkerron and Schomberg and the wider area of the Holland Marsh, Bradford West Gwillimbury and York Region.

The property of the farm before the Confederation of Canada was originally designated a “Clergy Reserve” for the Church of England. It was later purchased by the Brandon family who immigrated from County Fermanagh in the early 1800s along with the Mills, the McCutcheons and many others. The Brandons cleared the land, built the barn (the portion on the stone foundation) and the red brick house.  The Brandon farm was bought by Sinclair Mills (5th generation and grandfather of current owner) in the 1930s who lived and farmed across the road. The farm house remained empty for about 40 years until Ron Mills renovated and moved in and farmed both properties for his lifetime (he passed in November, 2021).

Thom and Lisa Mills, along with parents and children, have reimagined the farm into a place where many can enjoy. It is very much a part of our mission and purpose.

The family is joined by a growing team of events and hospitality professionals that are all focused on making your event the best it can possibly be.

Fermanagh Farms Timeline

In one way or another the property has been an active farm from at least 1893 (the date carved in the stone in the barn). We started hosting events in Fall 2019 and have excelled at service and hospitality ever since.

I had my wedding in August at Fermanagh Farms and it was an absolute dream. My guests were so impressed with the beauty of the venue. We chose this venue because they allowed us to bring in our own food and it was still relatively close to a major city for hotel stays. Most venues we looked at were kind of secretive with their pricings and I had to request a full on quote only after speaking to an associate. Fermanagh Farms has an online estimator where you could pick and choose options with their prices and get a rough total of what everything would cost. It was so helpful.Thom and his family are great hosts. They were attentive, friendly and professional. You can tell they take great pride in what they've built and in what they do. There was a snag with one of the vendors that incurred a surprise charge after the wedding. Thom let me know, but was respectful of the fact that I was on my honeymoon and allowed me to connect once I returned. In the end, he did admit the cost wasn't fairly warranted and waived it. Unlike most people, he put his ego aside and really cared about the impression he wanted to leave on us. I appreciated that so much. It really shows he cares. Highly recommend this property!Thank you Thom and Team for a memorable event. I couldn't have asked for a better day.

This was a wonderful quaint space that we enjoyed immensely. The grounds are very private and lovely. The barn apartment had everything we needed including laundry! The hanging string lights around the property at night are beautiful and just create a lovely atmosphere. Would highly recommend this property.

This venue is an absolute dream! The property is just beautiful with the barn, flower garden, meadows, and surrounding forest. My vision was to have a barn wedding but have the ceremony in the forest, and the Mills family at Fermanagh Farms made it happen, even though they said it hadn't been done before in that location. I was so happy with how it turned out, everything was exactly as I had pictured it!There is a cabin and bridal suite so our bridal party could get ready on site, and they have campgrounds as well so us and a few of our friends camped the night of our wedding, which was so much fun!Thom was such a pleasure to work with and really went over and above to help make our day perfect. He was responsive and thorough and reassuring, which is just what you need from your venue. We couldn't have asked for a better venue, it was exactly what we wanted! Highly recommend!
